Why Nonprofit?
The nonprofit sector has career opportunities for almost every skill set, area of expertise and background. If you want a career as an accountant, coach, social worker, program manager, IT specialist, nurse or specialist in any of many other professions, there’s a job for you in a nonprofit.
Over the coming months, the HR Council will introduce you to five young nonprofit professionals who will share their insights on working and building a career in the nonprofit sector in a series of candid video interviews.
Meet Amber.
To receive her bachelor of social work degree, Amber had to complete a practicum placement. At the end she had whittled it down to three choices: two for-profit organizations and one nonprofit. The nonprofit was the first interview she went to, and needless to say, she didn’t end up going to any others. To this day she is still working for the Catholic Family Services of Saskatoon as a counsellor and group facilitator. Watch the interview to learn more about a young person’s perspective of the differences between nonprofit and for-profit work.
Meet Jason.
As a program facilitator for Pathways to Education – Mosaic Counselling and Family Services, the majority of Jason’s work revolves around helping direct youth. It doesn’t stop there though. Jason is also passionate about new technology and because he works in the nonprofit sector, he is able to use both skills in the workplace. Watch the interview to learn more about the different roles Jason can fill in just a day’s work.
Meet Véronique.
Véronique was the Executive Director of the Jeunesse acadienne until the end of 2007, and now occupies a similar role as a joint Executive Director for the Fédération des jeunes francophones du Nouveau-Brunswick. Watch the interview and learn about the key role mentoring has played in her career (French only).
Meet Chris.
Chris used to work for an oil and gas company in Calgary. He was also a volunteer with the local chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Watch the interview and learn how he was able to translate a rewarding volunteer commitment into a full-time job with the MS Society.
